In order to video-conference over the web we are using Access Grid (AG). The Access Grid Support Centre can answer detailed questions and offer advice.
There are two types of AG tools: one (more costly in terms of outlay) is via an AG node which is a specially dedicated room fitted with cameras, microphones and a screen. The cheaper alternative is the Personal Interface to the Grid (PIG) node, which is a single web-cam that sits on a PC. The former is by far the best for group meetings, but the latter does very well for one-to-one or small meetings.
We are using a piece of software called Sakai to build a web-based framework for access to resources, the exchange of documents and so on. It has the capacity to build on functions associated with more commonly available teaching platforms, so that it is more oriented towards research functions. It is access over the internet and thus requires no special hardware beyond a personal computer with web-browser. It works best using Mozilla Firefox 1.0+, Internet Explorer 6.0+.
The commercial producer of AG software is Insors, from whom off the shelf nodes may be obtained.
There is also open-source software called AccessGrid2 Toolkit which is free. Support may be sought from the AGSC.
Detailed technical support relating to AG and PIGs can be obtained from Insors or the AGSC. The AGSC's FAQ are extremely helpful.
We are happy to share our experiences with these technologies. Please contact us if you would like to know more.
